Vedic Astrology Chart

You can calculate your Vedic astrology chart here using our chart calculator. Just enter your birth information and it will produce a chart for you. Vedic astrology is also called Hindu astrology or Indian astrology. It has a direct correlation with YogaAyurveda (The medical system of India), and it shares the same cultural references to those practices.

Main Difference Between Vedic and Western Astrology
there are quite a few important differences between Western astrology and Vedic astrology. However, most things are the same. Meaning, both systems use planets, signs and houses to delineate the chart. However, in Vedic astrology “you” are considered to be the rising sign, because it shows the sign that was ascending on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. This is much more accurate than a “sun sign” as is used in popular forms of Western astrology. The reason why is quite simple to understand. The sun was in that same sign for 30 days. Yet, your rising sign was the exact moment on the day you were born.

vedic astrologyOf course, the sun is important, but so are the other planets, especially the moon – when assessing an astrology chart – whether Vedic or Western astrology.

The biggest difference between the two systems, technically, has to do with how the zodiac is looked at itself. Western astrology uses is it yet based on the seasons. Where as Vedic astrology uses a zodiac based on the actual constellations in the sky – called the Sidereal Zodiac. There was a time when those two were in alignment, a couple thousand years ago.

However, currently they are almost one complete zodiac sign out of alignment. Meaning, if you are a Leo in Western astrology (Sun sign Leo), it is almost certain that the sun was actually in the constellation of cancer, the stars of cancer, when you were born.

This does not mean Western astrology is wrong. It just uses a different system. In fact, this is one feature of Western astrology. It is much more of an “open system”, for lack of a better way to put it. In Western astrology the outer planets of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are used. But so are many asteroids, and other celestial bodies.

In Vedic astrology traditional methods are much more important. The outer planets are not used because they are not seen by our naked eye. In addition, the planets are directly related to energizing factors that are connected to yoga, ayurveda and many other Indian metaphysical structures.

Nakshatras / StarsVedic Astrology Nakshatras
Another main difference between Western and Vedic astrology has to do with the distant stars, called Nakshatras. There are 27 of them in the zodiac. These Nakshatra’s mark the transit of the moon around the earth each day. It is believed that this “27 sign” Nakshatra-based zodiac was the first zodiac used by the Vedic people. It was the first one formally written about, but there is also clear evidence that back into the mists of time, 3 to 5000 years ago, the Vedic people were almost certainly using a 12 sign zodiac as well.
