My Crazy Friend:
I had this friend who used to compare everything to "basketball". No matter what the subject was he could find some way to proclaim,... "it's just like basketball" - and go on to somehow draw a strained and painful analogy between it and Basketball. Things as divergent as "the Catholic Church" and his job as a mid-level manager were all "just like basketball". Because basketball was the closest thing he had to spirituality and camaraderie, that was his reference.

What does this have to do with the law of karma? I have heard every explanation under the sun about what the law of karma is -- and very few of these explanations have anything to do with what is referred to as "karma" in the Yogic / Eastern system of its origin. After all, the word "karma" has a meaning -- that is connected to an actual healing system -- that is connected to Yoga, Vedanta, Astrology, and every other healing paradigm the world has ever known.

It is great that in our modern world we are exposed to so many concepts. Yet, our independent nature tends to turn everything into "one opinion after another opinion".  It seems there is no concept too subtle that cannot be reduced to a simple "well, to me it is just like,..." Although there are advantages to independent thinking, too often our opinions come from biases that have nothing to do with the original concept at all -- and in fact they may turn the original concept completely upside down.

Ancient Wisdom For Modern Times

The law of karma is very subtle and incredibly beautiful. Once you understand the law of karma you understand the governing law of the universe. Until you understand the law of karma you probably do not understand the nature of life in the universe. All of the recent "Hoo Haa" over the "Law of Attraction" is nothing but a small sliver of the law of karma.

The false choice of "Karma vs Free will" is a result of misunderstanding this beautiful and empowering approach to life. In our modern haste and ignorance we have taken the empowering law of karma and turned it upside down into something that seems fatalistic or a system of God doling out carrots and sticks - and other things. This is unworthy.

I recorded a 50 minute long video using the words of the Great Yoga Master Swami Sivanada - mixed with several analogies that I use in my astrology readings.

Who am I and Why Did I Make This Video?

I am Sam Geppi a Vedic Astrologer and teacher. I am asked question about Karma, Freewill and Astrology so often in astrology readings or classes that I'm teaching. Yet, in the moment I don't have time to sufficiently answer it because it is a very deep question.

People ask in a very casual way,as if such a profound cosmic mystery can be answered while giving an astrology reading. So, rather than take an hour to try to explain it to them (and take up their reading time) I give a very quick answer and move on. The same is true when I'm teaching an astrology class and someone asks the question.

Why Am I Qualified To Teach This Subject?

I have been studying Vedic sciences for more than 25 years. I started a regular meditation practice in 1983 and have been studying yoga, astrology and Eastern mysticism for most of my life. Not only have I read about these practices, I've been living them for 25 years.
