We have quite a lot of planets either debilitated or getting closer to debilitation right now. Both Mars and Jupiter are already debilitated and Venus and the sun are not far away. When a planet is debilitated it does not express its highest nature very easily. In fact, the thing that it rules in our consciousness becomes compromised and hard to fathom.

Jupiter Debilitated
Jupiter is the energy that feels like hope and inspiration. These are the things that get us through in life when we have setbacks. We have our teachings, teachers and philosophies to fall back on. These things allow us to remember the bigger picture, otherwise we get tangled up in all of the material setbacks of the world and get lost in the details. Jupiter has been debilitated for much of this year, and still is. So it is harder for us to remember our teachings and we have lost some hope.

Mars Debilitated
Mars is a planet of discipline that allows us to put into practice the things we believe in, not just talk about them or acknowledge them mentally. Mars gives us the toughness and discipline to sacrifice our happiness in the moment in order to do the right thing. When Mars is weak, rather than doing the right thing, we tend to argue with others over what the right thing is.

When Mars becomes debilitated, we become undisciplined. Rather than our actions being based on what we know is right for us in the long term (Capricorn), they become based on how we feel in the moment (Cancer). This leaves us feeling weak and overcome by emotions, rather than feeling tough and strong – which is the part of us that Mars is activating. Mars will be debilitated between now May 25, 2010. That’s a long time to have Mars weak.

Venus Debilitated
Venus is the energy within us that brings about happiness in life. We all want to enjoy life. That nature comes from Venus. When Venus is weak we simply don’t enjoy things as much. We don’t appreciate them as much, and we don’t feel as appreciated ourselves. That’s often the most difficult thing to swallow when Venus is weak.

Be careful in your relationships especially now, with not feeling appreciated. There may be a high sensitivity to that, especially with Venus joined Saturn, compounding this lack of appreciation with a lack of confidence. In fact, this tendency may only increase as the Sun also becomes debilitated on October 17.

Mercury to the Rescue
However, in general, the stellium of planets in Virgo (Mercury, Venus and Saturn) are being strongly supported by an exalted Mercury, the ruler of the sign. And in fact, these three friendly planets make for a very powerful Raja Yoga. So, even though we may not be feeling so good, this is a great time to get a lot of work done – especially detail oriented, artistic, technical type of work.

Between now and November 2 is a great time to deepen your commitment to your creative projects and bring them to fruition. If you’ve been kicking around ideas that have to do with writing projects, online publishing, starting a blog, revamping / rebranding your business, etc. – you won’t find a better time to do it for quite a while.

We can sit around feeling disrespected and without hope or we can jump into the creative power of the time. Between now and November 2 that means working on something that we’re passionate about, that we believe in. Make a commitment to bringing some sort of beauty into the world.

There will be a lot of assistance with Mercury exalted, or in an exchange with Venus, between now and November 2.

I’ve come to realize that there are as many relationship realities as there are people to experience them. They are all different and they are all dignified. Difficulties occur when we don’t know ourselves or understand the dignity and genius of our life and incarnation. Almost every time I hear a person suffering, especially in relationship problems, it is because they’re comparing themselves to some external ideal that is incongruent with their unique genius. They have some romantic ideal about how things are “for others”.

One of the most valuable things that come from an astrology reading is hearing someone with no stake in your story explaining to you what they see, how they see the cosmic genius expressing itself through you. This reconnection to our fundamental truth cannot simply be forgotten. Most of the time it reacquaints us with the fact that our relationships or career or any other thing in our life is a result of our choices – our priorities.

As I said, my relationships by most people standards would be considered unsuccessful, or even a failure. Yet, by my standards, now that I have more understanding, they are beautiful and perfect. And in fact, they always have been – even when I didn’t know it. Yet, I am better aware now of how the choices I make affect others. Using the wisdom of astrology I’ve been able to better navigate the present astrological current.

This current transit of Venus in Pisces has coincided with an equally powerful transit of Mars in Capricorn. Both of these planets are exalted. This means that both Venus and Mars are expressing themselves very powerfully right now.

Given the fact that Mars is also joined four other planets, in Capricorn, the nature of this exalted Venus is somewhat subdued right now. Instead, the dominant nature and themes of Capricorn has been prevalent. Hard work, determined effort, fear and inhibition have left us in more of a protective mode. Yet, there have been many heightened connections to relationship themes, but somewhat in the reverse. The softer and gentler qualities of Venus to relax and experiences pleasure has been muted.

On Sunday, the Sun entered sidereal Sagittarius, the sign of the archer. This sign is ruled by Jupiter, expressing himself in his external, masculine temperament. When the sun goes into Sagittarius it illuminates the path of activating higher teachings and spirituality in our life. The keyword with the sun is “illumination”. Wherever the sun is transiting, that area of life is “lit up” by the nature of the sun. Just like when the sun rises, suddenly we can see where we’re going. There is enormous promise when the sun goes through Sagittarius each year. It is the opportunity for us to purify and deepen our teachings. But before we can purify, first we must be able to see the darkness. No one goes out in the middle of the night to weed the garden. They wait for the sun to come up so they can make sure to pull up weeds, not the plants themselves.

Between now and January 15, when the sun goes into Capricorn, there’s a great opportunity for us to illuminate those darker corners of our spiritual psyche, and actually do something about it actively. These are the traits of Sagittarius. Connecting to teachers, teachings and spiritual practices that give us an experience of our true nature is supported. In many ways, it is quite appropriate that our holiday season falls with the sun going through sidereal Sagittarius. Amidst all of the clutter and hubbub surrounding the holidays, underneath it all there is a lot of spiritual beauty. This time of year is actually a celebration of the solstice, and the days finally getting longer.

In addition to the sun entering Sagittarius, Mars will also enter Sagittarius on December 18. Both Mars and the sun will be in Sagittarius for more than three weeks, adding a very active and courageous approach to the lessons I mentioned above. However, the nature of Mars is to be destructive. He is a Tamasic planet, one that destroys weakness. At best, a Sun/Mars conjunction will have these two fiery planets working in tandem with each other. The sun enters the house, illuminates the darkness and then Mars destroys the weakness, because now we can see it. This process just happened with the sun and Mars in Scorpio. However, there is also the possibility that rather than destroying “our weakness”, Mars takes it upon himself to destroy “other People’s weaknesses” – though arguing and conflict. This is the unfortunate and typical nature of Mars, not because Mars is “bad”, but because we tend to lack patience and maturity. Mars is the energy that shows us acting destructively through impatience and immaturity. This tendency is exacerbated now as Mars is still quite combust. From a place of weakness (our own mental weakness) we *argue with others* over our principles, rather than put them into practice ourselves. We must be very careful not to make a mistake of arguing about our principles rather than practicing them for the next three weeks. Sagittarius is a very candid and frank section of the zodiac. Jupiter is a benevolent planet, but he is more interested in clearly delineating the truth and inspiring us toward it. A person who has strong opinions but not a lot of mental strength can justify doing battle over those strong opinions when Mars goes through Sagittarius, the sign on our active philosophies.

Have you noticed this week, suddenly people are battling over their principles a lot more than they were last week. This is because the sun just entered Sagittarius, as was said, this battling nature will likely get worse once Mars enters. So, be alert.

Ask yourself:
Are you actually putting your principles into practice through your actions or just defending them to others / arguing over them?
Are you walking the walk or just talking the talk?

One thing to realize, once you start feeling anger welling up in you because someone is saying things that are stepping on your “sacred cows”, Mars is about to come out and defend your principles verbally. Be very careful. Make sure the argument is worth having. (are any of them actually worth it,.. BTW?) Make sure that expenditure of energy is actually worth it. Do you have another choice with that energy? Are you actually embodying the teachings you are about to defend? Because you see, the willingness to suffer for your principles in a verbal conflict, is also a willingness to endure physical and emotional discomfort *yourself* in order to grow spiritually – a choice you also face in that moment. Because you’re uncomfortable with what’s being said, and the other person is obviously “wrong” you can justify the anger/violence/mental suffering you are feeling by inflicting onto the other person.

However, realizing yourself as the true source and the solution to your discomfort, Mars also gives the mental strength and courage to internalize the heat of that anger toward the truth, not vindication or revenge – toward a more spiritual goal. This inner heat and internalization is called “Tapas” in yoga. It is what compels serious spiritual seekers to deprive themselves of sleep, deprive themselves of physical comforts like tasty food or sex in order to get more spiritual energy, clarity and insight, etc.

It is also the strength to deprive *ourselves* of the short-term satisfaction and adrenaline rush thrill of telling another person to go to hell because of what they said. As much as we may not like to admit this about ourselves, we feel good and fulfilled when we argue and defend our principles. We love to talk about our little victories and battles.

This capacity for discipline and to sacrifice winning the battle for winning the War (against our real enemy – ignorance) is also the energy of Mars, but a higher vibration.

Today Is the first day of the nine night celebration of the Divine mother in most of India. It is a  time to celebrate the victory of Goddess Durga over the Mahishaasura Demon.. the Buffalo demon that threatened to destroy all of creation.

But actually it is a celebration of more than that ultimately. Or you might say, all that is symbolized in this victory is exulted during this time.

On the first three nights Goddess Durga is worshiped. Hers is the energy within us that destroys ignorance.

On the next three nights, Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped. Hers is the energy within us that cultivates enjoyment and happiness.

On the last three nights, Goddess Saraswati is worshiped. Hers is the energy within us that cultivates love wisdom.

On the last night, the great victory itself is celebrated.

There’s great wisdom and understanding in Hindu symbology. As shown by this divine mother celebration, there can be no wisdom until there is love. There can be no love until darkness/ignorance is destroyed. As long as we are tangled up in ignorance (anger, fear and delusion – qualities of Tamas)  there is no happiness or contentment possible (Lakshmi). Thus, first we need mother Durga to remove the darkness. Only then are we capable of love — either giving or receiving.

At that point, abundance, trust, love, prosperity and the joy of life flows into us through the realm of Goddess Laxsmi. Although she is worshiped for wealth, her main boon is contentment. This Goddess has all of the wealth in the universe, but she cares only to be devoted to Lord Vishnu – the bringer of balance and peace.

Once there is contentment, wisdom flows. As long as we are longing for more wealth, love (passion), beauty or enjoyment, there can be no wisdom. The qualities of creativity, knowledge (of truth / Veda), divine love, harmony and wisdom are given by the goddess Saraswati.

First we must destroy ignorance (Durga) – in order to feel good about ourselves and others. This  Leads to contentment (Lakshmi). Once we are calm and contented, wisdom flows into us (Saraswati).

Yet we  have a lot of wild buffaloes running around in our heart and mind. These buffaloes of ignorance, desire, attachment, greed and selfishness are what the great Goddess in all forms is ready to unburden us of during this Nine Night celebration. We have a great opportunity to release these wild animals of ignorance and chaos at the feet of the most compassionate Divine Mother at this time.

This is also a time to honor the Goddess energy in every woman. The Divine feminine in all its forms is the reason there is life on Earth.

The masculine principle is one of power, the feminine principle is one of creativity. This is literally shown by the interplay of our sun and moon. The sun literally has the power for every being that has ever lived. Yet, without the creative principle of the moon – Going around the earth, regulating the seasons – there would be no physical bodies to experience life through form and mind – or in other words, what we call “life”.

This masculine/feminine duality of the Sun and Moon and thier ecstatic lovemaking is expressed by the Hindu deities and their masculine/feminine dualities. The ancient Vedic Seers knew it would be much easier for our human mind to understand the energy of the Sun and Moon portrayed as anthropomorphic deities, with faces, beautiful stories, etc.

Yet we should realize that life comes from the Sun and Moon. If either of these beings were to leave their orbit or stop giving their energy to the earth, everything would be dead immediately. All Vedic/Hindu rituals are in one way or another glorifying our natural connection to the universe and the deep principles this universe expresses through us at the divine beings.

Currently, debilitated Venus is joined Mars and Mercury in Virgo. I wrote about this last week, but now it has gotten much closer and tighter in the conjunction. You should be careful with the potential for aggravation and the inability to compromise or find a sense of balance and grace. You may be quite critical of your partners now. Channel your energy into constructive work with them rather than turning them into the project you are trying to improve.

The Saturn/Sun conjunction in Leo is also very tight right now. Normally this would be quite difficult, except there is a trinal aspect from Jupiter. I wrote about this also a couple of weeks ago, saying that early in September until around September 10 there was a lot of potential for positive change if you apply yourself.

The moon is moving through the most difficult section of the zodiac for her currently, Libra Scorpio.

Leo is a very important sign. It is ruled by the sun. The sun is the reason for life on Earth. In many ways our vitality, strength and power comes through the sign of Leo. Which ever house Leo falls from our rising sign shows our main source of strength and vitality.

For instance, an Aries person will feel vitalized by fifth house matters — individual intelligence and creativity. A Taurus will feel vitalized by fourth house things, emotional peace and comfort. A Gemini will feel vitalized by third house things, exploring their interests and communicating. This pattern repeats through the entire zodiac. This quality of feeling vitalized is being strongly activated now.

The Sun entered Leo on the 16th of August, the day of the lunar eclipse. Soon thereafter he joined Saturn, Mercury and Venus. Anytime there are four planets in the same sign at the same time it creates an imbalance of energy. We are all experiencing this desire to express our true power, urgently. This is because the sun is in Leo, his own sign. But Saturn is there, bringing doubt. Mercury has the potential to bring skill, but he may also be distracting. Venus has the potential to be creative and bring beauty, but she may also distract through sensuality and the desire for comfort.

Mercury and Venus will stay in Leo until next week. For the rest of this week expect from frustration around implementing and following through on your inspired vision. Be especially careful of the sudden lack of confidence and laziness since last week.

Now is a great time to push through and persevere in spite of these things. The reason is because of an approaching Jupiter/Saturn trine. Jupiter in Sagittarius will move into an exact trine with Saturn and the Sun. The most acute focus of this transit will be from September 2 to September 10. Plan something big around that time that helps fulfill your vision. A Sun/Saturn conjunction can actually be a great time for deepening our commitment to the most vitalized and illuminated truths we are trying to live in our mind and express in the world. But it will demand we face down our confidence problems and be willing to sacrifice our childishness toward a higher purpose. The reason great yoga masters and saints have all talked of service is not just because it is a nice thing to do, it is because when we serve a higher cause we forget our lower causes. We will not let our petty, smaller self interrupt our higher causes, this is why service is talked about.

I understood this lesson well the first time I taught my first yoga class. You must understand, I grew up with a terrible speech impediment, stuttering — worse than most could imagine. I lived in fear of talking into my early 20s. So, even when I was in my mid-30s the fear of public speaking was there. Yet, something happens to you when you see people laying on the ground peacefully with their eyes closed waiting for you to give them something. In that moment, my fear of stuttering or saying something stupid simply vanished. There was no room for my insecurities. There was only room for doing the best with what I had and what I had been taught. Then later, there was simply gratitude for the opportunity to serve the divine in them. It is ironic I make a living now talking and communicating. But it’s not surprising. Communication is the fulcrum of the lever in this incarnation for me. Serving others and serving the divine through words and ideas and various forms of communication and media is what I do most days. It is my joy and it is my struggle. It is my pleasure and it is my service. But more importantly, when I am in that role of serving a higher cause through words and ideas I cannot allow my insecurities, fears, anxieties and aggravations to corrupt up the process. Anytime it has, the work stops, and the worst feeling I could ever imagine descends upon me. Few things will feel worse to a person of good conscience than to disappoint someone who was hoping to be inspired by you. If failing in that role doesn’t wake you up, few things ever will.

This process has brought many issues to the surface in me. Transforming my insecurities into more maturity has revealed some very unlikely parts of myself. For instance, being a role model and an example is something I had never thought of or considered myself to be (and truthfully I still don’t although others do). Realizing that people look up to me in some way and the responsibility that comes from that has been hard to understand given my personal insecurities. Disillusioning someone because of my childishness and ignorance has been an amazing teacher. I have found this to be a place where the ego cannot squirm off the hook. The innocent investment of confidence that someone has when they are willing to be counseled or taught by another is an enormous trust. But I’m not saying these things just about me — I am saying these things about you also. Realize that you are a role model, or you can be a role model. But what are you modeling? What is your role? What are you respected for? How do you disrespect your higher vision? Do you squirm off the hook when you disappoint another? These are tough questions and I’m still answering them every day. In the past I wouldn’t have written such personal things about myself. Not because I’m embarrassed to share them, because I’m not. In fact, hardly nothing embarrasses me. I would not have shared it because I would not want people to think I am vain or full of myself. But I realize that in sharing my vulnerabilities and a modest path to certain redemptions, perhaps others may benefit. I know I have by hearing other people’s truthful stories.

Trying to be of service I guess. These sentiments I am sharing are very related to this Sun/Saturn conjunction. The effect of Saturn on the Sun will bring about humility, accountability, a reckoning for our mistakes and the determination to learn from them. Yes, the main reason Saturn wants to learn is to avoid pain and guilt. These things are good teachers. It is well known psychologically that the avoidance of pain is a better motivator than the promise of pleasure. Yet, ultimately there is no dignity in guilt, fear and avoidance. In the highest sense, Saturn gives us respect for the dignity of the human condition and our struggles here. The Sun is the part of us that would rather avoid acknowledging these limitations. So, ponder these things for the next few weeks. Service is the quickest path to God because in serving another the focus is not on yourself and your ego and your smallness and the problems that you worry about and never stop talking about. The focus is on another and once the focus is on anything other than our ego, God flows into us immediately.

Actually, there are some very powerful days ahead of us once this current configuration releases. Most notably we will have exalted Mercury for close to two months, then Venus and Mars exchanging or in each other’s signs for another couple of months. In general, most of this year, through December is shaping up to be pretty positive all things considered.
